Interactive Design - Definition

According to Gilian Grampton Smith
"..interaction design is shaping our life with interactive technologies—computers, telecommunications, mobile phones, and so on. If I were to sum up interaction design in a sentence, I would say that it’s about shaping our everyday life through digital artifacts—for work, for play, and for entertainment."

Interactive designers design how interactive technologies, or computer-based systems behave. In order to create good interactive design, one needs to think about the user of the particular system as it involves the experiences of the user and the quality of how the user and the system interact. Good interactive designs have to have a level of usability, aesthetic qualities, communicative qualites, sociability and navigationability suitable for the user. Designer Bill Morridge's ideas about creating good interactive design include the use of prototypes in order to understand and investigate whether the users are pleased with the design which in turn allows for improvements on communicative design ideas and concepts for the system.
